April container volumes for Singapore port down month-on-month Singapore posted a total container throughput volume of 2.3208 million TEUs in April, down 3.68% month-on-month but up 11.3% year-on-year, according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). Preliminary estimates from MPA on Thursday showed boxes handled by PSA and Jurong Port in April were down 88,800 TEUs from 2.4096 million TEUs in March 2010 but up 235,700 TEUs from 2.0851 million TEUs in April 2009. Dominant operator PSA handled 2.2523 million TEUs of throughput for April 2010, while smaller operator Jurong Port moved 68,500 TEUs. April figures were the second lowest for the first four months of the year, at just above 2.1832 million TEUs seen in Feburary. The figures were also about 15% short of the highest monthly record of 2.729 TEUs achieved in July 2008. Singapore handled 9.2459 million TEUs for the first four months of 2010, up 14.1% from 8.1033 million TEUs in the corresponding period a year ago. |
