Belt conveyors are widely used in mining, metallurgical and coal industry to transfer sandy or lump material, or packaged material. According to different transfer requirements, the transfer system can be only one belt conveyor or multi-conveyors, or combined with other transfer equipments. The belt conveyers can be in horizon or in slope to meet the needs of different transfer lines. A belt conveyor£¨Fig27-1£©consists essentially of an endless moving belt to support the material to be conveyed. For carrying bulk materials, the belt is generally given a troughed shape by intermediate rollers or idlers for greater carrying capacity and economy. The belt is driven by a pulley and is supported on runs, going and coming, generally by rollers, but sometimes, and especially for light work and short distances, by a runway. The material is loaded on the belt in some convenient way, and later it is removed from it at the end of the line or at some point along the run by the appropriate device. Coal ,ashes, gravel ,cement and stone are a few of the essential bulk materials which are carried by belt conveyor, but any other loose or granular material in bulk form which does not adhere too closely to the surface of the belt may be also handled successfully. The elements of the belt conveyor are: ¢Å A belt in order to carry the material and transmit the pull, ¢Æ Means to support the belt, often rollers or pulleys, ¢Ç Means in order to drive the belt ,usually a pulley or a pair of pulleys. ¢È Accessories for: Keeping belt tension, such as take-ups. Loading the belt, for instance, a chute or feeder. Discharging the material, for example, a chute or tripper. Cleaning devices, such as brushes and covers. Belt conveyors are, under common circumstance, the lowest in cost of power and upkeep. Friction losses are less, since the material does not come into contact with the moving surfaces of pulleys and shafts. The belt with its rollers weighs less than other types of conveyors doing similar job, and hence the supporting structures are relatively lighter. Belt conveyors enjoy wide application in various fields for moving diverse unit load and bulk materials. A belt conveyor has the following characteristics: long transporting distance, large conveying capacity, simple construction, and simple operation and so on. The permissible particle size of a belt conveyor not only depends on belt width, belt speed, trough angle and dip angle, but also depends on the frequency of large-block material appearance. Table 4-1 shows the maximum particle size of various bandwidths. Table 27-2 shows the technical data of belt conveyors.
